MUSIC
Statement of Intent

Music is all around us. It is the soundtrack to our lives. Music connects us through people and places in our ever-changing world. It is creative, collaborative and challenging. Seaton Sluice First School is proud to be a 'singing school'. Music is at the heart of everything we do: it is our ethos, our daily routines and our heart beat

The Model Music Curriculum (MMC) was created in 2021 to ensure a universal provision of music education for all pupils in all schools. It states that all children should receive a minimum of one hour of teaching each week; this may take the form of short sessions that are spread across the week. This should also include some whole-class instrumental tuition for pupils in Years 3 and 4.

Music has a rare and special ability to unite people; music making can connect people in a unique way. At Seaton Sluice, we want to celebrate the unique gifts of everyone and celebrate the inclusion of all pupils.

The implementation of music teaching

Our music curriculum sets out the progression of learning in the following key areas, which when taken together, all contribute towards the steadily increasing development of musicianship.:

  • Singing
  • Listening
  • Composing
  • Performing/Instrumental performance
The rich and varied framework nurtures fundamental musical techniques alongside building musical knowledge which in turn, provides musical understanding. Pupils are provided with the opportunity to access music collectively, within whole school singing sessions, in classes and also in small group tuition. We strive to establish a firm musical foundation which will be built upon in the future.

The Impact of Music at Seaton Sluice First School
We want our pupils to have music in their hearts and soul! Music enrichens and brings people together. Our children will feel confident in expressing themselves through music and be able to talk about how music makes them feel. They will be able to develop patience as they practise and perform. They will feel proud of their many achievements and remember their time at first school through their happy experiences including many songs that they have sung together. We want our pupils to take their love of music wherever they venture and whatever they do!
